What would you do if an eye operation left you with spectacles? Amin Sharad Modak (29) decided to take revenge on as many doctors as he could by cheating them of their money. As a former credit-card agent for Standard Chartered, he knew how to do that. And so Modak — operated on by a Charni Road doctor for detachment of the retina a year ago — cheated 25 doctors of a total of Rs 15 lakh. He was arrested on Tuesday after he bought a SIM card using a stolen credit card. Police tracked down his mobile number and address from the mobile-phone company records.
Modak’s modus operandi was simple. He would call up doctors, tell them their credit limits had been raised and would visit them asking them not to use the card for the next four days. He would put the card in an envelope and send the doctor away for some gum, in the meanwhile exchanging the genuine card for an old worthless one and later handing the sealed and signed envelope to the doctor.
Modak went on a shopping spree, buying clothes, mobile phones, and yes, medicines.
