PUNE, Nov 29: Protesting against the confiscation of handcarts by the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) despite adhering to rules, members of the Akhil Pune Cantonment Rahivasi Hathgadiwale have demanded the regularisation of the business of hawkers operating within the cantonment limits.
A memorandum to this effect was submitted by association president Karan Makhwani to the cantonment executive officer J Sharma protesting against the `harassment’ meted out to hawkers and the exorbitant penalties demanded on the confiscation of carts.
The association president demanded that the fine of Rs 500 imposed on confiscated handcarts should be scrapped and the goods released.
The association members staged a morcha and a hunger strike outside the office of the cantonment to press for their demands. Congress MP Vitthal Tupe met the delegation of the hawkers and promised to look into the matter.
