
DHAKA, JULY 22: A security blanket was today thrown around Bangladeshi Prime Miniser Sheikh Hasina Wajed after a powerful time-bomb, apparently intended to kill her, was found near the dais from where she was to address a rally later in the day.
The explosive, weighing about 76 kg, was discovered yesterday only 50 feet away from the rostrum at a local college ground in Kotalipara area in her home district of Gopalgang, police and media reports said today.
Three suspected members of the Islamic Chhatra Shibir, the student-wing of the fundamentalist Jammat-e-Islami, have been arrested in this connection, official bss news agency quoting Gopalganj superintendent of police Mohammad Jasimuddin reported.
The suspects had been identified as Sibbir Ahmed from Gungipara in the district and Jahangir Hossain and Faridduzzaman alias Tarun from nearby Kotalipra area, it said. Sheikh Hasina, who is on a two-day tour to the district said, “I am not afraid of death as it is inevitable and will come when God will desire so.”
She said, “Almighty Allah sends people on the earth to perform some duties and they will not die till those works are accomplished.”
The explosive in a metallic container, attached to batteries, is being examined by army-experts at the Jessore Cantonment, official sources said.
