
Three days after forest fires engulfed Greece, a probe has been ordered into whether arson attacks, which have been blamed for the worst forest fires in 150 years, could be considered terrorist acts. The public order ministry said Dimitris Papangelopoulos, who is responsible for prosecuting terrorism and organised crime, ordered the investigation to determine 8220;whether the crimes of arsonists and of arson attacks on forests carried out in the country during the summer of 20078221; could come under Greece8217;s anti-terrorism law. The fires have killed around 63 people. On Monday, a fire broke out on the fringes of Athens a day after a massive effort prevented the birthplace of the Olympics from being devastated by flames.
What8217;s a forest fire?
A wildfire, also known as a wildland fire, forest fire, vegetation fire, grass fire, peat fire or hill fire, is an uncontrolled fire often occurring in wildland areas. In medieval times, the word 8220;wildfire8221; was a synonym for Greek fire as forest fires are common during Greece8217;s hot, dry summers.
