Santiniketan, June 14: A CPI-M gram panchayat member in West Bengal8217;s Birbhum district was today beheaded by a group of miscreants, police said.

The miscreants hurled bombs at Jugal Kishore Mandal 35 when he went to bathe in a pond at Tabuk village under Moureshwar police station. He, however, managed to escape and took shelter in a house.

The miscreants dragged him out of the house and beheaded him with an axe, the sources said.

While the torso was found near the pond, the head was missing.

Police suspect that the killing was in retaliation for the murder of a Trinamool Congress leader last November. Mandal was suspected to be involved in the killing.

Tension prevailed in the area after the incident.
