Andhra Pradesh CM Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy said today that the government may bring in a legislation to implement its decision to provide five per cent reservation to Muslims in jobs and education. The state8217;s move has hit a roadblock, with the Andhra Pradesh High Court suspending its reservation order.
8216;8216;We are committed to providing this reservation. We are contemplating bringing in a legislation, if need be, on the subject,8217;8217; Reddy said while talking to reporters here today.
Reddy said the high court had stayed the state government8217;s decision till Tuesday and had asked educational institutions not to fill up the five per cent quota of seats earmarked for Muslims.
Reddy said the government was legally examining this issue and was exploring ways and means to overcome the problem. The BJP welcomed the HC order. BJP parliamentary party spokesman Vijay Kumar Malhotra said: 8216;8216;We welcome the stay on the Andhra government8217;s order. Reservation based on religion is against the nation and the Constitution.8217;8217;
