SEVILLE, AUG 29: Maurice Greene today became the first athlete to complete a sprint treble at the world championships on Sunday when he anchored US to the men’s 4×100 metres relay gold.

After winning the 100 and 200 metres, Greene ran the final leg in the relay as US clocked 37.59 seconds to win the gold ahead of Britain and Nigeria.In Seville, Greene became the first person to win both the 100 and 200 at the same championships.

Greene overtook Dwain Chambers on the final leg but the British still set a European record 37.73 with Nigeria finishing third in 37.91.

The Bahamas won a surprise gold medal in the women’s 4X100 metres relay on the final day.

Debbie Ferguson anchored the winning quartet to a year’s best 41.92 seconds for Bahamas’s second world championship gold after Troy Kemp’s men’s high jump title in 1995 in Gothenburg.

France took the silver in a National record 42.06 and Jamaica won the bronze in 42.15. Defending champions US came a disappointing fourth in 42.30.
