Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today hit out at Myanmar and Bangladesh for sheltering militants from the Northeastern region and called for international cooperation for tackling insurgency there.‘‘Neighbouring countries like Myanmar and Bangladesh are providing shelter to militant groups from the region. Given this scenario, what we need today is international cooperation to tackle the situation,’’ Gogoi said while inaugurating a two-day conference of police chiefs of the Northeastern states.Gogoi’s statement came close on the heels of a letter he received on October 4 from David C.Mulford, US Ambassador to India, in which he offered to provide the technical support of the FBI for investigating the recent spate of violence perpetrated by the NDFB and ULFA.‘‘The whole world must join hands to fight terrorism,’’ the Assam Chief Minister said, calling upon police forces and intelligence agencies to improve coordination and intelligence sharing.N.C. Padhi, Special Director, IB, echoed Gogoi’s line and said that several neighbouring countries were actively conniving with ‘‘an agency of another country’’ (read ISI) in promoting insurgency in the region.
