CHANDIGARH, July 13: Admissions to the plus one classes of most of the ordinary schools in urban and rural areas in the city began today. The students securing over 33 per cent marks in the matriculation examination were interviewed here today.

Heavy rush was witnessed at Government girls senior secondary schools, Sector 8 and 20, besides other ordinary schools in urban areas for the Arts stream. Most of the seats in the science stream in GSSS-15 and GSSS-27 were filled till yesterday when candidates securing between 33 and 50 per cent marks were interviewed.

All the non-medical seats in GSSS-15 and GSSS-27 were filled today. But seats in the medical stream are still left in both these schools and the girls schools in Sector 8 and 20. Of the total 240 seats in Arts in GGSSS-23, 85 were filled today.

Admissions started in GSSS, Sector 38 (West) with 24 students seeking admission in the Arts stream; GSSS, Dhanas had six students offering Arts stream; 12 opting for Arts and seven for vocational in GSSS, Karsan. However, very few admissions were made to the extended sections of GMSSS-16 and GMSSS-35 in the three colleges.

All the model schools in the city including Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 18 have already exhausted their admissions in the commerce stream. While the highest cut-off percentage in commerce was recorded by GMSSS-16 at 70 per cent, the lowest was that of GMSSS-23 and GMSSS-33 at 50.

The option of this stream is not available to the students of ordinary government schools, both in urban as well as the rural areas. Even in case of non-medical and medical streams, all seats in various model schools in the city have been filled. The highest cut-off percentages in the non-medical stream were recorded by GMSSS-35 and GMSSS-16 at 80.6 per cent and 80.4 per cent, respectively. So far GMSSS-16 has recorded the highest cut-off percentage in Arts at 55 per cent, followed by GMSSS- 35 at 50.4 per cent. But for the reserved quota seats in Arts, the remaining have been filled.

According to Karan Singh, Co-ordinator Admissions, majority of the seats in the ordinary senior secondary schools will be filled by tomorrow when all the remaining candidates including the compartment cases will be interviewed for admissions to the plus one class. He further disclosed that since some of the toppers had taken admissions in more than one school, a few seats will fall vacant when they withdraw from one of them at the start of the session.

While the admissions will close formally tomorrow, a few admissions will be made up to August 31 with the permission of the DPI (Schools).

The local migration will also be allowed only by the DPI in case of genuine cases, but no migration will be allowed from college to school and vice-versa, it is learnt.
