MUMBAI, JAN 29: General Motors India, a fully owned subsidiary of $ 161 billion General Motors Corporation, today launched the all-new improved version of its premium segment car Opel Astra 2000. The Astra 2000 model, besides being Euro-II compliant right from the date of introduction, has a more powerful engine, new transmission, new tropicalised air-conditioning system and new looks among other exclusive features.

Presiding over the launch, its president and managing director Richard Swando said that taking a cue from its customers, General Motors India had gone in for a "price feature" rationalisation and has introduced three distinct variants – Astra Advantage (Rs 7.79 lakh), Astra Gli (Rs 8.79 lakh) and Astra Club (Rs 9.94 lakh), all ex-showroom-Mumbai prices.

The prices are higher between Rs 20,000 and Rs 22,000 compared to the 1999 level. Astra Advantage comes with new features like power steering, central locking, power side mirrors, electric rear defoggers as standard equipment and has beencompetitively priced. The bookings for "Opel Astra Advantage" will start from January 31, he said.

GM India has adopted a "straddle pricing" strategy to combat competition through efficient benchmarking to increase appeal for all its three variants. Due to substantial localisation, it has also succeeded in pricing the parts competitively by reducing between 10 per cent and 40 per cent and ensuring the availability in abundance across the country.

GM India will start bookings for the globally acclaimed smaller mid-sized car "Opel Corsa" from April 7, 2000. The Opel Corsa is one of Opel’s most successful models worldwide selling over a million cars annually, he added.
