Khaleda Zia charged in graft case

DHAKA: A charge-sheet has been filed against former Bangladeshi prime minister Khaleda Zia on corruption charges, alleging she illegally scrapped appointment of 287 police sub-inspectors and inducted party cadres in the force, soon after coming to power in 1991. The anti-corruption bureau yesterday submitted the charge-sheet in the chief metropolitan magistrate8217;s court against Zia and her home minister Abdul Matin Chowdhury, the largest circulated Bengali daily Ittefaq said today. It was stated in the FIR that the caretaker government of Justice Shahhabuddin Ahmed before the general elections in 1991 had recruited 287 persons as police sub-inspectors.

BBC hit by stir

LONDON: Thousands of technical staff staged a 24-hour strike at the British Broadcasting Corporation BBC today disrupting news programmes in protest at plans to introduce multi-skilling. Flagship news shows were pulled and some filming was stopped as the television and radioorganisation went on air without some 6,000 workers.

Indonesia crash

JAKARTA: An Indonesian military helicopter crashed in East Timor today killing 11 of the 12 people aboard, including the Army general responsible for security there, the military said.

Rushdie fatwa

TEHERAN: The grandson of Iran8217;s late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini has supported the death fatwa against the British author Salman Rushdie, the State-run television reported.
