ISLAMABAD: In his heydays he was the scourge for the rival defenders and Friday night Shahnaz Sheikh taught the dacoits how difficult it was to get the better of one of the most brilliant centre forwards hockey has ever produced.

Sheikh, who narrowly escaped the indiscriminate firing of dacoits in his house in Rawalpindi, caught one of the culprits, though his personal guard got killed in the process, according to reports reaching here.

Two robbers broke into Sheikh8217;s house and forced the former hockey ace and his family to hand over cash and jewellery at gun point. When the dacoits were leaving, Sheikh8217;s personal guard Mohammed Khan challenged them that prompted the intruders to open fire and fatally shoot Khan.

They also fired three shots at sheikh. But not only did he escape, he managed to pin down one of the dacoits, who is languishing in police custody now. The other dacoit, however, decamped with the booty, reports said.
