
Costner to direct Maradona?
HAMBURG: Former Argentine football great Diego Maradona is looking to Hollywood actor and director Kevin Costner to direct his wild life’s story, the sport Bild weekly reported.
“Hopefully I can talk him into it,” said Maradona, who will be 39-years-old on October 30.
The project, which will be broken into three 90-minute films, is expected to cost $17.6 million to produce. It is scheduled to come out sometime in 2001 and be shown in Argentina, Spain, Italy, Japan and the United States, sport Bild said.
Maradona is said to be playing the leading role himself.
Arjuna to comment
COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s former skipper Arjuna Ranatunga, who lost his captaincy and place in team, has now been permitted by country’s cricket board to be a television commentator for the triangular One-day tournament beginning at Sharjah on Wednesday.
Ranatunga’s request to accept the offer to join the international panel of commentators for the Sharjah tournament hasbeen approved, board sources said.
Banks elected
INDIANAPOLIS: Former world record holders Charles Moore, Willie Banks and marathon great Bill Rodgers were elected to the National Track and Field Hall of Fame.
The late Larry Ellis, a former president of USA Track and Field, was also named to the Class of 1999.
Moore, 70, recently retired as athletic director at his alma mater, Cornell University. During his competitive days, Moore set a world record in the 400-metre hurdles and never lost a race at that distance. He was the 1952 Olympic champion and also won a silver medal in the 4x400m relay.
Banks, 43, was one of the world’s greatest triple jumpers during the 1980s and set the world record in 1985. He was a member of three Olympic teams and represented the US internationally 18 times.
Rodgers, 51, was a member of the 1976 Olympic team, but is best remembered as a four-time winner of both the prestigious Boston and New York City marathons.
Schumacher arrives
SEPANG, MALAYSIA:Former Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher arrived in Malaysia in a bid to help his Ferrari teammate Eddie Irvine clinch the world title.
Witnesses said Schumacher, who earlier planned to miss Sunday’s Malaysian race after breaking his leg in two places at the British Grand Prix in July, walked with a slight limp.
Pele’s advice
DUBAI: Brazilian soccer legend Pele has said the moment of truth has come for England mid-fielder David Beckham to prove his star quality and offered a word of advice to the temperamental Manchester United star.
“Now is the moment to prove he’s good, because when people don’t know who you are, and when the coach and players don’t know you, it’s easy to play,” Pele told AFP in an interview.
