Boxing champions nearly come to blows outside ring

CALIFORNIA: Unbeaten boxing champions Oscar de la Hoya and Fernando Vargas nearly came to blows at a restaurant here when the Golden Boy8217; came with Vargas8217; next opponent, southpaw Raul Marquez.

The feud stems from what Vargas calls a snub by fellow American de la Hoya when he went to train with him as an amateur and de La Hoya8217;s vow that, 8220;I will never give Fernando Vargas a shot.8221;

Jelena Dokic defends rowdy father

SYDNEY: Australian teenager Jelena Dokic has defended the actions of her father after he was expelled from a women8217;s tennis tournament in Britain for abusing officials and then arrested by police for drunk and disorderly behaviour.

Dokic, 16, told reporters that her father had done nothing more than cheer for her during her match against Italian Rita Grande, which Grande won 6-2 3-6 9-7.

8220;I feel he hasn8217;t done anything wrong, he was just cheering,8221; Dokic was quoted as saying in the Sydney-based Daily Telegraph.

Klinsmann named captain of FIFA stars

SYDNEY: Former German World Cup hero Juergen Klinsmann was today named as captain of the FIFA all-stars team to play Australia at tomorrow8217;s official opening of the Sydney Olympic stadium.

8220;This is a great honour for me and also a great pleasure,8221; Klinsmann said after his arrival in Sydney today.
