
Mijatovic8217;s refusal is for Real
BELGRADE: Yugoslavia international striker Predraq Mijatovic is refusing to play for Spanish giants Real Madrid in their next league match on April 4 in protest against NATO air strikes against his country. 8220;The majority of Yugoslav footballers in Spain will do the same thing,8221; Mijatovic claimed during a television interview in Montenegro on Tuesday. 8220;I could not wear the jersey of Real Madrid knowing that my parents are sleeping in a garage,8221; said Mijatovic, who returned to Belgrade to collect his son Luka. Real are scheduled to take on Alaves on Sunday. The Spanish first division is home to 37 Yugoslavian footballers. Spain is one of the NATO member countries which has participated in air strikes against Belgrade.
Beckenbauer for Matthaeus as coach
BONN: Bayern Munich8217;s veteran libero Lothar Matthaeus would be perfect successor to Germany head coach Erich Ribbeck, said Franz Beckenbauer, Bayern Munich president and a vice-president of the German Soccer Federation on Wednesday. 8220;Lothar is predestined to become head coach. He knows how to read the game, analyse it and rate it,8221; Beckenbauer told the weekly Sport Bild.
Ribbeck, who was appointed after Berti Vogts stepped down last September, has a contract running until Euro 2000. Matthaeus, 38, was to celebrate his 134th cap for Germany in an European Championship qualifier against Finland later on Wednesday.
Walker stalled for two years
LONDON: European 200 metres champion Dougie Walker was banned for two years today after testing positive for the steroid nandrolone last December. Traces of the steroid were found in an urine sample taken during an out-of-competition test. A committee convened by the British governing body UK Athletics concluded Walker had a case to answer. 8220;Doug Walker is suspended from athletic competition pending a disciplinary hearing,8221; UK Athletics said in a statement released on Wednesday.
