Atherton out of World Cup

LONDON: Mike Atherton was ruled out of England’s One-Day World Cup squad on Tuesday because of a long-standing back problem. Atherton, England’s former captain and most experienced player, has not competed in One-Day cricket for two years although he has an impressive One-Day record in England.

Gilchrist called

SYDNEY: Australia’s touring party to the West Indies has called up limited overs wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist because of doubts over the fitness of Ian Healy.

Australian cricket board spokesman Patrick Keane said, “Healy has sore calf muscles so Gilchrist was being sent to the Caribbean — as a precaution.”
