May 27: Greater Bombay police overcame a fighting Fatima Parish (Sewri) 3-1 to make the final of the MDFA Guru Nanak football tournament, today.The cops now await the winners of the MLBW (Andheri)-Cafe Royal semifinal to played tomorrow to contest the final.

Early moments of the semifinal at the St Xavier’s Ground (Parel) saw the Sewri team dominate but the cops struck against the run of play.

Abdul Shahid’s well laid through pass in the 18th minute was accepted by Narayan Pawar who ran past the Fatima defence including Edmund Furtado and Manu Shetty before beating onrushing Anil Beldar in goal.

Fatima made efforts to strike back but Anthony Albuquere missed a golden chance three minutes later with police goalkeeper Praney Dhakle at his mercy. A wayward shot denied Fatima the equaliser.

Greater Bombay Police took their lone goal lead into the second half but were hardpressed to preserve their advantage as Fatima began the session in similar vien.

Action switched to the other end as Fatima missed chances and Babu Kohram swelled the lead in the 38th minute. A fine pass by first-goal scorer found Kohram connecting neatly.

Kohram netted his second three minutes from time capitalising on Kapil Chauhan’s pass to make it 3-0.

Fatima Parish earned a consolation in the dying moments of the match. A header by Rahul Tare from Lionel D’Souza’s corner that gave the goalkeeper no chance, pulled one back for the Sewri outfit.
