SINGAPORE, SEPT 5: A pleasant surprise awaited Saurav Ganguly when he reached the Kallang Oval here this morning — he was named the skipper of the Toronto-bound Indian cricket team.

A dress rehearsal for him lay in store the very day when the Indian think-tank decided to test its bench strength. Though Ganguly first tryst with leadership ended in defeat, he appeared quite content in the manner which his team battled it out.

“Considering that it was a young side, I feel it was a good performance by the team. We were well placed until (Brian) Lara came and played that magnificent innings. So were we when myself and Rahul (Dravid) were batting. My dismissal was the turning point,” he extolled.

Expressing happiness on his appointment as captain for the forthcoming tournament, Ganguly said: “Any cricketer would cherish becoming India’s captain one day. I would be lying if I said I am not happy.”
