Former prime minister and Janmorcha Party chief Vishwanath Pratap Singh on Monday lashed out at the Mayawati Government for going ahead with 8212; what he termed as 8220;useless8221; 8212; Ganga Expressway project.

8220;The Rs 40,000 crore being spent on it should have been used for the welfare of farmers in the drought-hit Bundelkhand region of the state,8221; he said, while addressing farmers from Gautam Budh Nagar and Ghaziabad districts at Mihir Bhoj College in Dadri.

Singh has been leading a campaign against Reliance and Noida and Greater Noida authorities on land compensation rates and has alleged that the condition in the villages of these districts is similar to that of Nandigram. Regarding the recently-started acquisition process of 88 acres of land, apart from the already allotted 2,300 acres for the power project, Singh said, 8220;Land cannot be snatched away. Can they take away steel or cement from the multinationals without their permission? If land has to be taken for a project as big as this, the farmers8217; demands for a better compensation rate cannot be neglected.8221;

The farmers of Ghaziabad, Noida and Greater Noida have organised themselves under Kisan Sangharsh Samiti and have demanded a higher compensation rate for the land acquired by Ghaziabad Development Authority, Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority and Noida Authority. They have been demanding an increase in the rates at which land has been acquired from the farmers elsewhere, as the rates of commercial properties have shot up.
