HRD minister Arjun Singh is now playing Santa for institutions founded by Mahatma Gandhi.

His Ministry has decided to fund three such institutions 8212; Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth, Pune, Gujarat Vidyapeeth, Ahmedabad, and Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth, Varanasi 8212; that are dedicated, among other things, to research on the life and work of the Father of the Nation. Singh realises that these institutions did not receive much help during the tenure of his predecessor, Murli Manohar Joshi.

Singh convened a meeting on the future of these institutions at the Ministry this evening. It was decided that these should 8216;8216;not only be given required financial support by the government but a special recognition should be accorded to them due to their distinct character8217;8217;. It was felt that these institutions were 8216;8216;living memorials of Mahatma Gandhi and assumed great significance8217;8217; in the Indian higher education context.

Present at the meeting were the vice-chancellors of the three vidyapeeths.

The Ministry decided that the UGC8217;s interim committee on 10th Plan Review will undertake the review of these institutions on a priority basis.
