Fresh tension in Singur over farmer146;s death

She ruled out any plans for meeting Tata Motors chairman Ratan Tata, who arrived in the city on Thursday evening to attend the Tata Tea AGM on Friday.

Tata is yet to figure in the state Government8217;s strategy to combat the TMC8217;s protest, with state Industries Minister Nirupam Sen saying it was unlikely that the state Government would meet Tata on Friday.

On Thursday morning, farmer Naren Das8217;s death triggered fresh tension in Singur. The victim had refused to take compensation for his land. 8220;My father had spent all his life on the land. The land was God for him,8221; said Krishna Satra, his daughter. 8220;On Wednesday night, he fell ill and suffered a massive heart attack.8221;

The Save Farmland Committee members alleged the death was due to tension at the continuing deadlock. 8220;He broke the day he lost his land and died due to the tension,8221; said Becharam Manna, convener of the Save Farmland Committee.

CPIM supporters, however, alleged the victim was an old man and died a natural death.

Meanwhile, the clash broke out between police and Congress supporters while the latter had taken out a procession.
