Unidentified gunmen shot dead a top retired officer of the Russian Federal Security Service, the successor of the KGB, and his wife, on Sunday. Col Gen Anatoly Trofimov, the FSB’s former head of the Moscow and the Moscow region, was instantly killed when two gunmen opened fire on his Grand Cherokee jeep while he was getting out of the vehicle with his wife, Tatyana Kopytseva, on Sunday. Kopytseva was seriously wounded and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she died on Monday. The only survivor of the attack was their four-year-old daughter.

So far, no suspects have been arrested. A high-level investigation team has been set up to investigate the case. Investigators were examining several motives for the murder, an official in Moscow said.
