
VADODARA, June 17: Having already distributed more than 11 lakh saplings to individuals and organisations in the city during the past five days, the Vadodara circle of the social forestry department plans to take the Van Mahotasva to each nook and corner of the district in the next month.
State Chief Conservator of Forests Ashok Kumar told Express Newsline that this year8217;s Van Mahotasva celebration would be different as it is the festival8217;s golden jubilee year, and the first time that the forest department8217;s social forestry wing, Vadodara, had undertaken the project. He exhorted his officials to involve non-government organisations NGOs and take the festival to people8217;s door-steps.
Vadodara circle deputy conservator of forests Dr R M Patel said that he had already asked all his about-100 foresters to provide people from all walks of life with plants of their choice on demand, at less than a rupee each.
8220;This has been done in the district8217;s urban areas. It is estimated that about one crore saplings will be distributed during the next month8221;, he said.
According to Patel, the next step would be to involve NGOs and rural people. 8220;We officials will distribute saplings through taluka headquarters and more than a dozen nurseries located in the interiors of the district to farmers and individuals through Panchayats, other official agencies, and NGOs, and supervise their rearing8221;, he added.
