The Union Home Ministry will put up a proposal in the next Chief Ministers’ meeting to empower the Centre to rush troops to states without waiting for a request from them.

Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Wednesday said the Centre has received suggestions urging it to be more active in this regard. Addressing reporters, he said the ‘‘issue is being discussed at several levels’’. ‘‘While some states have told us that they would appreciate prompt reaction from the Centre, others have raised objections to any pro-active move by the state vis-a-vis rushing of troops,’’ Patil said.

The NDA had tried to make similar changes but met with strong resistance.
