I have a friend who insists that she puts on weight each time she inhales the aroma of good food. Till recently, I had always smiled indulgently. But now, to my utter surprise, I find that there may well have been some truth in what she has been saying.
It is now being increasingly recognised that calorie restriction in diet offers the benefit of extending the lifespan of all sorts of organisms 8212; from flies to primates. In fact, such diets seem to improve health in humans as well.
A study published recently in Science demonstrates that the longevity benefit of calorie restriction can actually be negated by food odours. The reason for such phenomenon is thought to be a link between food odours and metabolic rates.
If this is true, then since metabolic rates affect body weight, my friend may well have been right. I must however, hasten to add that the study concerned has been conducted on fruit flies.
But since fruit flies and humans have the same metabolic processes at the cellular level, my guess is that the results of this study may well be established in humans as well.
What implications does this have for those on weight reducing diets? It is too early to tell and so there are no hard scientific truths to follow yet. But those on weight reducing diets may even consider staying away from food aromas.
How does one avoid food aromas? A quick poll among my medical colleagues had amusing suggestions that included 8220;get a cold8221;; 8220;put a clip on your nose8221; and 8220;stuff cotton wool in the nasal passages8221;. For now, let us wait and watch if there is any follow-up study on implications for humans.
