First private power transmission project inaugurated

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today inaugurated the Tala Transmission Project, the country's first private transmission project connecting Bhutan to north and east India.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today inaugurated the Tala Transmission Project, the country8217;s first private transmission project connecting Bhutan to north and east India. The Tata8217;s hold a 51 per cent stake in the project and Powergrid the rest.

Dedicating the project to the nation, the PM said his Government was 8220;linking India into a web of partnerships with countries of the region and beyond through free trade and economic cooperation agreements8221;. He said 8220;regional cooperation provides unique opportunities to transform the richness of our human and natural resources into cooperative regional activities8221;.

The PM said the transmission system, which brings power from the Tala hydel project in Bhutan into India, is 8220;a symbol of national integration8221;. 8220;The line will enable us to evacuate power from Bhutan and supply it to the eastern and northern regions of our country,8221; he added.

The project, built at a cost of Rs 2,800 crore, enhances the power flow capacity between east and north by 2000 MW. The transmission line, which came into operation last year, has till now been able to ensure exchange of about 3,500 million units of surplus energy between the regions.

The PM said 8220;we can replicate our highly successful model of bilateral cooperation with Bhutan with Nepal too8221;.
