Telugu megastar Chiranjeevi formally announced his entry into politics on Sunday. The celebrations started outside his party office in Banjara Hills long before his maiden press conference came to end as hundreds of frenzied fans burst firecrackers and took out processions heralding the star8217;s long-awaited entry into politics.
8220;I know people and fans have waited for long. Today, after 30 years in the field of cinema and receiving adulation and appreciation, I announce that I am joining politics. It is an unforgettable moment for me8230; this turn in my life towards politics. Today, I dedicate the rest of my life to praja seva. This opportunity to serve people is a blessing and offering from God,8221; Chiranjeevi said at the overcrowded press conference where he often had to speak in a raised voice to be heard over the din of an over-excited media.
Keeping the focus on himself, Chiranjeevi addressed the press conference alone. Though without his aides, the actor did not display any first-time jitters. 8220;I am accepting the responsibility that people and fans placed on me by wishing that I join politics. In the last few months I have travelled a lot and met a number of people. Some of them are widely respected and revered in this country. One such person is Dr A P J Abdul Kalam. One meeting with him and the doubts I had, on whether to take the plunge or not, were eliminated. My interaction with him was like a driving force, an inspiration,8221; Chiranjeevi said.
During his interaction, Dr Kalam told him about an incident in Chandigarh where only a handful of students raised their hands when he asked how many of them aspired to become political leaders.
8220;It is pathetic, Dr Kalam told me. Youth, students and the public in general do not have a good opinion about politics and our political leaders and that is why people like you should join politics, Dr Kalam urged me. That was the turning point and I decided to take the plunge,8221; he said.
8220;Today, I am only announcing my entry into politics. On August 26, the birthday of Mother Teresa, I will announce my party and flag at Tirupati,8221; he said.
