
IT in small firms
The Confederation of Indian Industry CII has measured the international competitiveness of its small industry members. An analysis of 450 SMEs reveals that although the Indian small industry is gearing up to meet international norms in technology, quality and IT, considerable efforts are required before they can be termed as truly internationally competitive8217;.
While the usage of IT tools, such as e-mail and the Internet were common, majority of the surveyed 83 per cent were not using e-commerce; 16 per cent said that they were beginning to use e-commerce while only 1 per cent claimed to be using e-commerce to the maximum extent. Seventy per cent of the units surveyed by CII were found to be using email while 60 per cent were using the Internet.
