The Janata Dal (United) came down strongly on the UPA government today for having voted in favour of reporting the Iran nuclear issue to the UN Security Council.
Former Defence Minister and NDA convenor George Fernandes said the government, for the first time, had made India a ‘‘part of US designs’’.
‘‘India’s vote in IAEA is clearly against our own national interest and breaches the broad national consensus on foreign policy. India has for the first time become a direct party to the designs of the US, to limit the sovereignty of other countries not convenient to it,’’ he said at a press conference.
Announcing that his party will launch a nationwide campaign opposing the government decision, Fernandes said: ‘‘Iraq was sought to be repeated in Iran and India was this time party to it.’’
He did not spare the Left parties, which had opposed the decision. Their opposition, Fernandes said, was limited to just making public statements while they were in a position to reverse the course. ‘‘A hypocritical lot trying to run with the hare and hunt with the hound,’’ was how he described it and said the Left should reconsider support to the government.
