CHENNAI, Nov 19: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general secretary J Jayalalitha yesterday donated Rs one lakh to Fathima Bi, the social worker hailing from Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh, who recently received the prestigious UN Award for poverty eradication. Jayalalitha also made Fathima the secretary of the AIADMK women’s wing in Andhra Pradesh.
According to a party headquarters press release, Jayalalitha felicitated Fathima Bi and inducted her into the party after she (Fathima) expressed a desire to join the party.
The release stated that Fathima, who called on Jayalalitha at her residence yesterday, “expressed her desire to become a member of the AIADMK.” Not only was she given a certified membership card, but Fathima Bi, the sarpanch of Kalva village council, was also made the secretary of the party’s women’s wing in Andhra Pradesh, “in order to enable her to serve people better, particularly the womenfolk and to also reach greater heights in her work,” the release noted.
FathimaBi invited Jayalalitha to the Kalva village to see for herself the many welfare schemes initiated by her for the people there. Jayalalitha, while accepting the invitation, informed her that she would be visiting Kalva village soon, the release added.
