Violence by the banned People8217;s War Group PWG during elections has become routine in Andhra Pradesh. Apart from attacking policemen and alleged informers, the Naxalites have targeted candidates and damaged election material and public property in a bid to enforce their boycott calls.

The PWG stepped up violence in the 1994 Assembly elections, killing 25 persons, including 15 policemen. Most of the incidents took place in the eight extremist-affected districts of Telangana region Adilabad, Warangal, Karimnagar, Medak, Nizamabad, Nalgonda, Mahboobnagar and Khammam. Though the number of murders by the PWG went down in the 1996 Lok Sabha elections, there was a rise in incidents like snatching of ballot boxes. In the 1998 Lok Sabha polls, four policemen were killed.

The following is the break-up of incidents in the past three elections:1994 Assembly elections: Policemen killed: 15; Others killed: 10; Vehicles set ablaze: 14; Ballot boxes snatched: 3

1996 Lok Sabhaelections: Policemen killed: 2; Others killed: 5; Vehicles set ablaze: 11; Buildings blasted: 8; Railway stations set ablaze: 3; Ballot boxes snatched: 421998 Lok Sabha elections: Policemen killed: 4; Others killed: 9; Vehicles set ablaze: 7; Ballot boxes snatched: 29
