8226; With reference to the reports 8216;8216;TenaCITY8217;8217; and 8216;8216;VivaCITY8217;8217; on the Mumbai floods, the political leadership and the government administration could not cope with the rains. However, it would be unfair to lay the entire blame on the Vilasrao Deshmukh government. Mumbai has been breaking at the seams due to its burgeoning population. It still has an archaic sanitation system that no government has tried to improve. The accumulated problems of many decades culminated in the present situation. The chances of Mumbai ever becoming Shanghai seem doubtful.
V P Damodar, Pune

8226; To avoid floods, not only in Mumbai but all over the country, the government must take adequate steps, starting with a good drainage system.

8226; With reference to Tavleen Singh8217;s column, 8216;8216;Trapped in her mother-in-law8217;s shadow8217;8217;, Sonia Gandhi is no dimwit. Like her mother-in-law, she has definitely learnt to tame the Congress. She is not naive enough to follow Indira8217;s economic policies.
Shanta Hotta, Mumbai

8226; In recent times, Tavleen Singh, when not bashing Islam, is busy bashing Sonia Gandhi. Most of her articles are against Islamic terrorism or Sonia Gandhi. It8217;s high time she left aside her obsession with these two issues and concentrated on other more important issues.
Amjad K Maruf, Mumbai
