
MUMBAI, July 21: Taking a school or college examination can at times be similar to being put through a wringer. Vouching for this, a whopping 80 per cent of college students have, in a survey, indicated that the present examination system does not bring out the best in them.
The survey, conducted by the newly set-up Finesse Youth Club, surveyed 3,800 students in various junior and senior colleges. The survey, which was released at a press meet on Tuesday, also indicated that despite the discontent with exams, 67 per cent of the students felt that exams by themselves were necessary.
The club chairperson Samruddhi Kasbe, also a student of Bhavan8217;s college Andheri, further stated: 8220;The number of boys and girls interviewed was almost equally divided. While 2,100 students were from senior colleges, 1,700 were from junior colleges. Over 70 per cent stated that they were tense while preparing for exams. And surprisingly, 71 per cent of collegians said they wanted books to be allowed in the exam hall.8221;
Theclub secretary Payal Gupta added: 8220;Based on the findings of our survey, we are holding a seminar on the Present Examination System8217; at Lala Lajpatrai College on July 25.8221;
8220;At the end of our seminar, we will submit a memorandum to education officers and concerned ministers and see how the examination system can be improved,8221; she added.
Principal D B Kadam of Bhavan8217;s college and Principal M G Shirahatti of Lala Lajpatrai college have agreed to help the students during the seminar.
