In a sensational twist to the case involving the murder of former DGP W R Marbaniang8217;s maidservant Rinehskhem Kharsohnoh, the Shillong bench of the Gauhati High Court ordered a CBI probe after the CID said Marbaniang tried to influence investigations. The CID had arrested Marbaniang8217;s cook Arwil C H Sangma, who confessed to having murdered the maidservant.
However, the CID is investigating the case further to find whether Sangma is trying to shield somebody by owning up. Marbaniang appears to be in trouble after the East Khasi Hills SP A R Mawthoh, city SP H Kharkrang, Rynjah police station OC U P Singh and sub -inspector N Khan gave written confessional statements to the court saying the former state DGP had tried to convince them repeatedly that Kharsohnoh8217;s death was suicide.
The written statement further said the ex-DGP asked his subordinates not to file any case and delay the matter for some more time. A case of murder was finally lodged three days after Kharsohnoh was found dead.
The state Government had handed over the investigation to the CID after the state police failed to make any headway. On March 7, the maidservant who was staying in a house inside the high security residence of the then Meghalaya DGP Marbaniang was found dead.
Initially, the state police dismissed the case as suicide but many found this not only strange but also felt that the police were being pressurised not to register a case of murder. Kharsohnoh was found in a pool of blood with her neck slit by some sharp weapon. It was later confirmed that the weapon was a dao. The state Government was forced to hand over the case to the CID and also transfer Marbaniang after women8217;s organisations protested over the way the police handled the case.
