
Andrew Symonds scored 69 runs Sunday as Australia beat New Zealand by 105 runs, their second straight win in the tri-series limited-overs tournament.
New Zealand were led by a Shane Bond hat-trick and a half-century from Ross Taylor. Bond, 4-61, took three wickets with three consecutive balls in Australia8217;s last over, but Symonds and Cameron White had already added 90 runs off 54 balls to speed Australia to 289-8 from their 50 overs.
New Zealand were bowled out for 184 in reply after the dismissal of Taylor sparked a collapse that saw the Kiwis lose their last seven wickets for just 23 runs.
Adam Gilchrist hit 61 from 57 balls in an 82-run opening stand with Matthew Hayden. Mitchell Johnson, Stuart Clark and Symonds each took two wickets in an attack missing a rested Glenn McGrath and Brett Lee, who has a chest infection.
Australian swing bowler Ben Hilfenhaus was handed the new ball by skipper Ricky Ponting in his first one-day international and trapped New Zealand opener Brendon McCullum leg-before with just his 12th ball. It left New Zealand 7-2 in the fourth over.
Stephen Fleming and Taylor 8212; playing his eighth one-day international and first against Australia 8212; added 73 runs for the third wicket before Taylor and Peter Fulton combined for 81 runs in 69 balls to have the visitors well-placed for a run chase.
But when Taylor fell to Johnson with the score at 161, it started the New Zealand slide.Bond8217;s hattrick was the 23rd in limited-overs international cricket.
He had White caught in the deep in the final over by Craig McMillan and Symonds caught behind by McCullum on the next ball. The New Zealand quick, who returned his 4-61 from 10 overs, then clean-bowled Nathan Bracken with the hat-trick ball.
