BHARUCH/VADODARA, July 27: A head constable and four constables have been suspended for dereliction of duty in the sensational Bharuch sub-jail break case that shocked the town over the weekend.
Meanwhile, the five hardcore convicts, who escaped from the sub-jail by scaling the 16-feet-high wall and another four feet of electrified barbed wire in the early hours of Sunday, in another dare-devil act, looted a businessman8217;s house in Surat last night.
Their involvement in the robbery was confirmed by the presence of a Hero Honda GJ-16-E-9800 motorbike outside the looted house. After escaping from the jail, the five desperadoes had stolen two motorcycles 8212; a Hero Honda and an Yamaha GJ-16-D-1285 8212; from a housing society near the jail. The second motorcycle is yet to be traced.
District Superintendent of Bharuch Police Ashish Bhatia told Express Newsline over the telephone that the convicts looted Rs 2.5 lakh in cash, ornaments worth Rs 2.5 lakh, expensive clothes and a white Maruti 800 car Gj-5-FF-2243 from the house of Arvind Mehta in Adarsh Society, in the Umra police station jurisdiction, in Surat.
Incidentally, Bhatia said a couple of the criminals 8212; who, between them had crimes ranging from murder to house-breaking against their names 8212; had robbed the same house once last year. As the miscreants required money and knew the location of the Mehta8217;s house, they might have considered it a safe bet and preferred to loot it instead of some unknown place, Bhatia added.
A police party had been sent to Surat to assist the police in the investigation of the matter, Bhatia said, adding that the police in the neighbouring states of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh had also been alerted about them.
