MUMBAI, May 27: The sentiment continued to be subdued on the Bombay Stock Exchange BSE in the absence of speculative support and lack of institutional buying. As a result, pivotals moved narrowly on alternative bouts of small buying and selling. The volume of business remained thin.

The BSE sensitive index moved between 3716.79 and 3681.72 before finishing at 3692.55, with small loss of 9.10 points compared the previous level of 3701.65.The BSE-100 index moved down further by 4.64 points to 1590.28 from the previous level of of 1594.92.

Brokers said in view of discouraging corporate reports, local operators were keeping their commitments low. Besides foreign institutional investors as well domestic financial institutions adopted a wait-and-watch attitude and they are unlikely to take fresh positions until the final decision on the petro price hike was taken by the Steering Committee of the United Front.

The volume of business was considerably affected due to SEBI8217;s decision to treat deliveries by unregistered sub-brokers as bad deliveries with effect from June 1. Operators refrained from doing business with this section fearing liability on them.

Reliance remained top in the list with a turnover of Rs 123.43 crore with a total business volume of Rs 492.25 crore followed by ITC of Rs 100.87 crore, SBI of Rs 81.53 crore, Telco of Rs 76.72 crore and Tata Steel of Rs 14.48 crore. Reliance lost further by Rs 4 to Rs 284.50 and SBI by Rs 2 to Rs 301 on selling pressure. ACC declined further by Rs 15.25 to Rs 1021.75 and Colgate Rs 8 at Rs 289.50 on profit taking.

On the National Stock Exchange NSE, equities declined further due to lack of buying support from major market players. The NSE-50 index opened at 1027.50, touched the day8217;s high of 1031.50, declined to the day8217;s low of 1023.45 and closed at 1025.70 showing a net loss of 1.20 points over the previous close of 1026.90. The Midcap index drifted lower by 9.50 points to 1095.15 against the previous close of 1104.65. The total turnover on the NSE was Rs 1295.07 crore.
