Environment fund gets rolling

In a first-ever initiative to make Himachal Pradesh a carbon neutral state, the government has set up an environment fund to be raised from all vehicle users and institutions contributing to environmental pollution.

The fund, to begin with, will be a voluntary contribution and the amount collected will be utilised only on checking pollution and its adverse affects.

Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, who had proposed the fund a fortnight ago, said the guidelines governing the fund have already been prepared.

8220;Principal Secretary Environment Sarojini Thakur has handed over the guidelines for the fund, which will have a separate account and not go to the government,8221; Dhumal told mediapersons.

Contributions have already been made to the fund by the Chief Minister, Cabinet ministers and senior bureaucrats and officials. The CM has made an appeal to all vehicle users in the state to contribute to the fund.
