
AHMEDABAD, Oct 21: Though there is adequate stock of petrol and diesel, the State Government has assured petroleum dealers that if the strike continues for some more time and stocks start depleting, either Government-owned vehicles or vehicles owned by petroleum companies will be pressed into service so that supply is not hit.
8220;The Government has assured us that police protection would be provided to vehicles used in transporting diesel and petrol,8221; Federation of Petroleum Dealers8217; Association Joint Secretary Arvind Thakker said.
Meanwhile, on the first day of the truckers8217; strike today, sale of diesel saw a 10 per cent decline as trucks, which mainly use the fuel, were off the roads. Sale of petrol, however, continued as usual.
Stock of diesel in the State is around 4.8 crore litres, while that of petrol is around 30.15 lakh litres. The stocks are enough to last for two and four days respectively.
Officials of different oil companies said they had received assurances from the Government that police protection would be provided to their vehicles in case they were required for supply of diesel and petrol. The officials said they had sufficient stock. 8220;We have sufficient petroleum stock in our storage at Koili and Sabarmati because diesel and petrol is supplied through pipeline,8221; senior manager technical services Indian Oil Company N B Nariyani said.
Similarly, Divisional Manager of Bharat Petroleum Corporation O S Shanmugan said they had around 180 kilolitres of petrol and 356 kilolitres of high speed diesel in its storage, which was enough to last for several more days.
8220;In case the strike continues, the Government will deploy private trucks and buses of Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation for supply of diesel and petrol and police protection has been promised for the vehicles,8221; he said.
