With the Bengal Engineering and Science University BESU authorities suspending undergraduate classes a day earlier, empty classrooms, laboratories and workshops greeted the 14 members of National Board of Accreditation NBA team, who were on a visit to the university to conduct an inspection on Friday.
The NBA team, headed by Prof N R Dave, inspected thenbsp; infrastructure of the university like its libraries, workshops, auditoriums and hostels. Later, the team surveyed every department and interacted with the faculty members. However, the team couldn8217;t find any undergraduate students in the classrooms.
With the team expressing its desire to watch a cultural programme, the authorities had to ask students residing in the nearby areas to perform in the evening.
8220;The NBA team interacts with students to get feedback on teaching-learning process at universities. This time, however, this will not be possible. We do not know how the team is going to react over this issue,8221; said a teacher.
On Saturday, the inspection team is scheduled to interact with the alumni of the university and various representatives of the companies hiring students.
8220;NBA accreditation is like an audit for technical universities. It is necessary for students opting for higher studies as well as jobs abroad. Funds for the Technical Education Quality Improvement Plan are also given to only those institutes that have NBA accredition,8221; said registrar Biman Bandopadhyay.
In the last accreditation, nbsp;the university had scored less than 750 points on a scale of 1,000 and was given an accreditation for three years.
Even as the NBA team inspected the university, eight students arrested by the police in connectionnbsp;with Thursday8217;s violence at the campus were produced in the Howrah court and remanded in judicial custody till November 11.
