
A bill to replace an ordinance for setting up of a National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions was introduced today in Lok Sabha. HRD Minister Arjun Singh said it was aimed at facilitating minority educational institutions to secure affiliation to a Central university of their choice. The Lok Sabha also accepted the recommendations of the committee looking into the functions and mandate of North Eastern Council.

The Supreme Court8217;s recent judgement against general strikes in Tamil Nadu prompted Jibbon Roy of the CPIM to demand in the Rajya Sabha that the Government bring about a legislation to make the right to strike a fundamental right. He also declared, 8216;8216;workers are not going to abide by judicial proclamation.8217;8217;

The Shiv Sena says Indian cricketers should not be sent to Bangladesh for the two-Test tour following threats from an Islamic fundamentalist group. Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam said in the Rajya Sabha, 8216;8216;We don8217;t have faith in the Bangladesh police8217;8217;, and blamed Dhaka for leaving its doors open to the ISI. Nirupam was interrupted by Dipankar Mukherjee of the CPIM who said such comments should not be issued from the Indian Parliament.

The NDA staged a walk-out in the Lok Sabha to register its protest against the Government8217;s policy of 8216;8216;vendetta and witch-hunt8217;8217; against its political opponents. Raising the issue during Zero Hour, BJP deputy leader V.K. Malhotra referred to the registration of cases against former BJP president Bangaru Laxman and Samata Party leader Jaya Jaitly in the Tehelka case. 8216;8216;We have nothing to fear,8217;8217; he said, adding the Opposition did not mind a CBI inquiry.
