Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav charged the Centre with influencing the Election Commission’s decision to stall counting in Mainpuri and Karchhana Assembly constituencies. Apparently in a mellowed mood today, Mulayam requested the media to forward his appeal to the Commission.

A four-member EC team, meanwhile, reached Mainpuri today to investigate the complaints made by Congress and BJP. The team includes EC Secretaries Tapas Kumar and K. Wilfre and Under-secretaries M.N. Butalia and Y. Standhope.

The chief minister described the complaints on misuse of government machinery in the elections as ‘‘false and concocted’’. He also blamed the Congress and BJP for openly working together against the SP and appealed to the Left to raise their voice in this regard. Referring to the results of the bypolls, Mulayam said barring a couple of constituencies, Congress had failed elsewhere. Now, it was taking the help of the BJP and BSP to tarnish the SP’s success. ‘‘The Left parties should not keep silent over the issue,’’ he said.

Mulayam added that restriction on counting was a tool being used by the Opposition to stall all developmental work in Mainpuri. ‘‘They (BJP, Congress and BSP) want the code of conduct to continue so that the government is unable to take up any developmental work in Mainpuri which is a backward and under developed district,’’ he said.

Justifying the increase in the number of voters in Mainpuri, Mulayam said the youth had come out to vote for the young candidate. Besides, this seat had belonged to the SP for years. He also credited the farmers with voting for the candidate.
