PUNE, April 15: Glance at these results: As many as 49 absconding criminals were nabbed during the past two months. Old files pertaining to 1100 accidental deaths were appropriately disposed. The self-esteem of the common policeman is believed to be on the rise. More positive aspects are yet to follow.
These are the outcomes of an attempt to introduce a quality movement in the routine work of the district rural police. The brainchild of district rural superintendent of police Suresh Khopade, the quality concept is similar on the lines of the quality circles in the corporate world. At all the 28 police stations in the Pune district, there are now 8220;work improvement committees8221; comprising the entire police force of that units. A six-point programme has been formulated according to which the committees have been asked to carry out their work.
Khopade, who has earlier taken several innovative programmes for better policing, maintains that the main objective of the plan was to inculcate a team spirit among the policemen.
Speaking to newspersons today, he said in every police station, either big or small, it has been the experience that only particular individuals are involved in the work. The other staff, although competent and having a strong desire to achieve something outstanding, are left out because of the working system.
But not any more with the formation of the work improvement committees which hold meetings every week to discuss major problems and find their solutions. All the policemen irrespective of their ranks or status attend the meeting and come out with suggestions With the involvement of all the police, the team is able to take good decisions which are implemented with immediate effect, he said.
It8217;s nearly two months now that the quality concept has been introduced and already the results are coming. According to Khopade, individuals who never spoke had turned eager to come out with their suggestions. The six-point programme has asked the police to provide more people oriented service through the mohalla committees, improve quality in work, raise a sense of security among the people, give proper treatment to people from weaker sections of the society, foster good ideals for all round development both individually as well as in the family and beautify the surroundings of the work place and the homes. Khopade mentioned that there are as many as 1733 mohalla committees comprising of 1.2 lakh members in the district.
The deputy superintendent of police will visit the police stations every month, while the district circle officers will visit police stations twice a month to inspect the working of the improvement committees. The committees have been directed to hold 8220;brain storming sessions8221; where every policeman comes out with a suggestion regarding some major problem. All policemen have been asked to develop the habbit for staying fit mentally, physically as well as spiritually, Khopade said.
