
The city police arrested 117 persons for drunken driving on Monday. The traffic police department and the Regional Transport Office RTO jointly carried out the drive. Police said they would book people for drunken driving throughout the city on New Year8217;s Eve.
The police will intensify action against the drunk drivers on New Year8217;s Eve. The traffic branch has prepared special squads to conduct this drive, which will conduct surprise checks on the city road from 4 pm till 5 am on January 1, deputy commissioner of police Manoj Patil traffic said in a press release.
Patil appealed that all vehicle owners should carry original documents of their vehicles with them and produce the same when asked by the police. Out of the 117 drivers booked by the traffic police, 76 have been issued notices asking them explanations as to why their licences should not be suspended. On New Year8217;s Eve, the city police has also given permission to eateries to remain open till 12.30 am. Barricades would be erected on all major roads and chowks across the city. People would also be booked for rash driving, police said.
