LONDON, JUNE 2: Based on form throughout the qualifying stages, this team would scare me to death with a balance of solid and expansive batting well down the order, some scintillating bowling, with back-up in the unlikely event that it would be needed, brilliant fielders for the key positions either side of the wicket, and an inspirational captain.

The openers, Saurav Ganguly and Nasser Hussain, a novice to the job who exceeded expectations, offer a left-right combination and sound technique against the new ball. Rahul Dravid and Ganguly, with three centuries between them, are streets ahead of the opposition in runs scored so far, and Sachin Tendulkar, having scored the tournament8217;s only other century, is, well, Tendulkar.

Abroad he would bat higher: here, as the most accomplished player, we will keep him away from new-ball damage. Jacques Kallis8217;s form has tailed off, but he is a class batsman who has taken good new-ball wickets as well, while there is no finer finisher on the planet than the remarkableMichael Bevan.

Moin Khan wins selection as the wicketkeeper over Ridley Jacobs of West Indies because of his compelling batting, with runs scored at well in excess of one a ball. He will provide impetus as the overs begin to run out, as will Lance Klusener, whose three man-of-the-match awards are testament to his all-round skills and his temperament.

Wasim Akram is a genius and will share the pace bowling with Allan Donald, operating in his habitual first-change mode, while Saqlain Mushtaq, unfathomable, is the solitary spinner. No place then for Glenn McGrath, Brian Lara, either Waugh twin, Jonty Rhodes, Inzamam-ul-Haq although his fielding and running between the wickets are as much a source of joy as his sublime batting nor Darren Gough.

Team: Saurav Ganguly India, Nasser Hussain England, Rahul Dravid India, Sachin Tendulkar India, Jacques Kallis South Africa, Michael Bevan Australia, Lance Klusener South Africa, Moin Khan Pakistan, Wasim Akram captain 8211; Pakistan, SaqlainMushtaq Pakistan, Allan Donald South Africa
