Right from Sir Garfield Sobers, coach of the team at the 1983 World Cup, to Dav Whatmore who plotted the famous World Cup win in 1996, foreign coaches have played an influential role in Arjuna Ranatunga8217;s career.

Yet today the former Sri Lankan captain advises both Sri Lanka and India to be cautious in appointing their next coach. Now a deputy minister in the federal government, Ranatunga said both countries should appoint a short-term coach first and then decide on a long-term coach.

8216;8216;Both our countries should take it easily. It8217;s all right even if it takes three or four months. As far as I8217;m concerned you need to appoint the right person and not just fill the gap.8217;8217;

8220;It8217;s not about picking a player. This is something more important and bigger because it concerns a national team8217;s think-tank. So even if it means appointing an interim coach for the first six months till all parties concerned are convinced, then so be it8217;8217;, said Ranatunga.

Insisting that a coach will take time to settle down owing to working in a different culture and adapt, the selectors of coaches in both India and Sri Lanka have to look at these things before zeroing in on one name.
