Sudesh Bhosale, the well-known playback singer and versatile performer gave a live performance at Pimpri-Chinchwad Festival a while ago. The Indian Express zeroed in on him for a chat.
How did it all start? Hereditary
influence. I grew up in midst of music and started doing stage shows at a very early age. Besides singing, I love painting.
You are more famous as a stage performer. Do you prefer stage more than playback singing?
People like my stage performances. But it is not that I prefer one at the cost of the other. Stage is my first love.
If your stage show date coincides with a recording date, which will you prefer?
Generally, such things never happen. I book my dates of stage well in advance. But if somehow it happens, I will go for the recording, as no one can predict which song will come out as a superhit.
What is the secret of your popularity ?
Voice modulation is inborn. I never consciously imitated other singers but when I sing their songs, voice modulation comes to me naturally. I do have my style. Even if Amitabh Bachchan sings in his own voice, people will say Sudesh Bhosale is the original singer.
How much do you prepare while singing in different languages?
I have sung in all the national languages. I take a week’s time to correct my pronunciation and accent.
What is the role of the audience?
The audience is the ultimate authority in a stage show. Our role is to please and satisfy their demands. A performer cannot offend the audience which makes him popular. They are the real judges.
A message for budding singers.
Some of the upcoming singers are very talented. Bollywood is a professional world. You have to be the very best.
Only then, can one survive in this age of cut-throat competition. But the good thing is that today’s generation is getting so much coverage due to the mushroom growth of private channels, which we lacked, and they should take full advantage of it.
