JAKARTA, JUNE 17: State physicians examined Indonesia8217;s ex-president Suharto today to determine whether health problems had affected his memory, as he continues to face a corruption investigation.

Supardi Sudibyo, a government doctor, said the 79-year-old8217;s physical condition appeared quot;normalquot; after a range of tests.

quot;But we are still studying all the results,quot; he said.

quot;We checked his brain function to find out the condition of his memory.quot;

Suharto has had at least two strokes in recent years and has been hospitalised several times.

He ruled the world8217;s fourth most populous nation for 32 authoritarian years before he was forced by protests and riots to quit in May 1998.

Since then, he has been fending off allegations that housed his time in power to enrich himself as well as his family and friends.

Last month, he was placed under house arrest after state prosecutors complained that he was not cooperating with a probe into his wealth.

Suharto8217;s lawyers have said the old leader8217;s memory has been diminished by his health problems and he is unable to remember many details of past business transactions.

Last Monday, Suharto reportedly was unable to answer many questions put to him by prosecutors who are trying to establish whether he used seven charitable foundations under his control to siphon off millions of dollars from state coffers.
