PUNE, July 26: For the doctors who find no other option to the arduous task of turning the pages of voluminous reference books on medicine or have to invest heavy cash in purchasing the latest updates in their subject, the info super highway has a workable solution.

The first ever seminar on use of latest services on internet for doctors by Cyberem8217; internet firm, held in the city on Sunday, provided many instant8217; solutions to the medical practitioners for some of their basic problems.

About a hundred doctors drawn from general and specialised fields of medical science were given the basic information on the concept of internet and its applications in the field of medicine.

Elucidating the various aspects of internet in the field of medicine Dr R V Banpel, research officer at Hardikar Hospital said that at a nominal cost the medical practitioners can avail the best literature and information available on medicine in the entire globe just at the mere push of a button.

At present there are 300 world renowned medical journals available on the Net which include the world8217;s topmost medicine periodical 8211; the British Medical Journal. At present in order to keep themselves abreast with the latest development in the field of medicine, the doctors have to invest a huge amount in purchasing these magazines, whereas all such journals can be browsed on the Net by seeking the connection at a comparatively negligible cost, said Banpel.

Besides this, he said there are hundreds of websites available on the internet which deal with various areas of specialisation like orthopaedic medicine, cancer, surgery, types of medicine systems ranging from allopathy to homeopathy and ayurveda under the alternative medicines.

Each such category is further subdivided into subtypes and the doctors can access the particular information required by them on any topic in a flash of a second and at all times.

Also in case the doctors, some handling complicated cases, want to seek some expert advice, they can send their queries through e-mail on web sites. Within a maximum of 72 hours they get a reply from one or more experts from any part of the world, said Banpel. For doctors dealing with AIDS patient there are as many 17 sites available on the Net from which general to highly detailed information on the subject can be sought.

Explaining the significance of the internet seminar for the doctors, Banpel said, 8220;In India there is a lot of ignorance among medical practitioners about the facilities provided by the internet hence there is a need to create awareness among them.8221;
