NAWANSHAHR, Oct 8: The first-ever meeting of the district Sainik welfare board was held, here today, under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Roshan Sunkaria. Addressing the meeting, Sunkaria said that the office of the district Sainik welfare board has started functioning in the town at Friends Colony Tel. No. 25075.

Now ex-servicemen would not have to go to Jalandhar for getting their official work done, Sunkraia said, while adding that the district board would, from now onwards, take care of the needs and problems of about 35,000 ex-servicemen and their families that are currently residing in the district.

The meeting was attended among others by Lt. Col. Manmohan Singh, Deputy Director, Sainik Welfare Board, Jalandhar, Lt. Col. R P Thariya, P S Johal, SDM, Balachaur and R K Rampal, Chief Agriculture Officer, Nawanshahr.

Sunkaria informed that economic help of Rs 300 per month being extended by the state government to ex-servicemen of 65 years of age and above has been deposited in their bank accounts and arrangements have been completed to provide Rs 100 as travelling allowance, instead of the facility of free bus passes for war widows, about 100 in number in the district.

Lt. Col. Manmohan Singh said on the occasion that Army men who had deserted the Army in the wake of Operation Blue Star would now be treated as ex-servicemen for all intents and purposes. He said free vocational training being provided to the wards of ex-servicemen in Jalandhar would also be provided at Nawanshahr. Grand-children of ex-servicemen who had won bravery awards would be given concessions while giving admission to educational institutions, Lt. Col. Manmohan Singh said.

KISAN MELA ON OCT 13: Experts of Punjab Agriculture University PAU, Ludhiana, will provide the farmers with the latest technical know-how on the Rabi crops at the district-level Kisan Mela that will be held at the K C Palace on October 13. While DC Roshan Sunkaria will inaugurate the Mela-cum farmers8217; training camp, Director, Agriculutre, Avtar Singh Randhawa, would preside over it, said an official release here.
